power to manual steering
it dawned on me not to bother with the power rack thats in my car and just swap it out. i read some very helpfull posts here regarding the swap, im getting some leads on a manual rack and intermediate shaft but im a little confused regarding "outer tie rod ends" i know im looking for tie rod ends for a late offset number 944-347-033-03 but im not exactly sure what these are... are they outer tie rod ends for a "late model car with manual steering"? and do i need "INNER tie rods as wel" (944-347-033-01)l?
im confusd how these tie rods apply to the application. i think i know what they look like, but im not exactly sure what im looking for.... they ARE NOT the tie rods that are currently on my car. right? whats is an OUTER TIE ROD end? do i need these? what ive located thus far is the manual rack from an 84ish with the intermediate shaft.... as for getting the right tie rods, finding them on ebay, or via other users im confused as to what i need... all i have to go in is the part numbers.

The 84 944 did not come from the factory with a manual rack.
The manual rack tie rods are a female attachment to the rack as opposed to the male attachment for a power rack. You might be able to see the difference in the PET parts catalog.

The problem with putting a manual rack on late offset car is the tierods.. they are super expensive. The tie rods are unique to the car, aswell as the tie rod ends.
The inner tie rods for the power steering are threaded on the end. The inner tie rods for a manual steering car are not threaded on the end..instead the tie rod end is threaded. The other difference is the inner tie rod end is threaded (the portion that screws into the steering rack). On cars with power steering, the tie rods instead thread onto the rack. Basically the threads are on the opposite part of everything. ParagonProducts is one of the only places that still sells the manual tie rod ends seperatley..everywhere else either dosent have them in stock or only sells it with a complete manual steering setup. You need part # 944.347.033.03 for your late offset car to goto power steering. That includes both the tie rod end and the inner tie rod. The thing that set me off from putting a manual rack on my car is in the event i ever need a new tie rod end....yea, good luck finding one!

jon that completely cleared it up for me, thanks a lot!!
i guess i was confused that when you buy the tie rod, it may or may not come with the outer tie rod ENDS. so i can assume if I buy part 033.01 i will need to verify the ends on that tie rod are 033.03 ends... PS. i got 4x 24 inch 6 ton stands today for the car, the torque tube should be scared, very scared.

so the guys selling the manual racks "with tie rods" are good. im talking with someone who has a rack set with tie rod ends (for the early offset) for 250.
the trick will be i need to find ENDS for the tie rod hes including with the rack, i need to find end numbers 033.03 once i find those guys, i should be good to go. right? im catching the drift here, because it seems you cant just buy the ends to go on the rods, you need to buy the whole assembly which is 150 bones (each!) how much could little ends be?? ![]() ![]()

the outer ends are no problem (and should be available relatively cheaply), i replaced them on the manual rack i put in my '84 (not ALL 84 cars are power, george!)
i shopped around for tie rods when i got mine and i believe i got them for 45/side for the EARLY ones. i believe that the outer ends are simple for either early or late to find, but the tough part to get is the shaft/inner piece that is LONGER for the late cars. the rack you are buying for early cars will swap into all early offset cars, that is, everything up to '86. you will need to source the longer tie rods for the late car, i don't have the part number off-hand but can dig it up tomorrow (i'm seriously considering making my 951 manual steering). the tie rods SHOULD come with both inner and outer pieces, the ones for my '84 did i believe. the reason i replaced the inner ends on my rack was because there was at least 1/2 inch play on one of the ball/cup style inner ends... d'oh! when you buy used always check out EVERYTHING first... although the manual racks themselves are VERY hard to break. just get new ends (if you can find them relatively cheaply let me know where, 'cause i'll order a set right behind ya) good luck!

Kevin, if you are buying a complete manual rack from someone, you still need to get both the inner and outter manual tie rods. The inner tie rods for a early offset car are shorter than the late offset tie rods.

this post says

the ends are the little L shaped brackets with the ball in the middle of the L. so if someone is selling me a rack with 'early offset tie rods' im assuming the only thing i'll need to find further is the outer tie rod ends? i found the complete set of tie rods on paragon, they were 150, those included the tie rods and ends. but thats easy cause its a package deal. but im back to being confused again. Paragon Tie Rod Link this is tie rod is the same as the one i would buy with the early offset rack but the differance is this one is coming with the late outer tie rod ends. im really confused now ![]() ![]() ![]()
