PO Rant
Why the hell is EVERY fastener torqued to 1,000 ft lbs? Is that to make up for the lack of any mechanical skill, evidenced by your fondness of RTV and electrical tape? Or Exhibit B the 15 gallons of Gulf of Mexico mix I drained because you thought refilling solved a bad head gasket?
My stunt wrench is working hard for the money. Sadly, corrosion is not a factor. Just had to use a 4 ft pipe to get the lugs off...impact wrench already failed miserably. It took so much force that I was steering the car. So anyone got recommendations for the bolts holding the caliper on? Can't get my pipe inside the wheel well, nor maneuver the impact in there Already tried interlocking two combo wrenches, still couldn't get it. I'm thinking a 3 lb sledge sounds promising but can't think of how to implement it. I am amazed through this whole rebuild I have only ruined one fastener, which was only ruined because my allen key broke off in it.

Lots of lubricant and some heat. lol Are the bolts hex head or allen? Try a socket and breaker bar for the hex, or a long allen, and bang on it with a rubber mallet...I did the allen/mallet and they finally came loose. If they are allen, make sure you hold the wrench all the way in, or you'll strip the shoulders. Good Luck

rubber mallet = fail. Though if i get a bigger diameter pipe I can use if on an offset box end. Maybe if I crimp the wheel I can aim whatever tool I use out of the fender. Too late tonight.
I have to commend Porsche on the highest quality fasteners I have ever seen. Other than an exhaust bolt I twisted in half, which I planned on replacing anyway, I don't think I've even come close to misshaping anything. I've actually bent several autozone tools on this project without the use of my trusty pipe.

I know how you feel... Torque wrenches are seldom used by POs. For the mounting bolts on the caliper I sprayed with WD40, let it soak 5 min. and used one mother of a pry bar. For this reason, usually when I do a repair on the car I replace all the bolts with factory replacements.

I'm with you on this. I recently did a brake job on my Benz. Had it at a tire shop to put new rubber on it. The maroon must have set the pressure to beyond infinity. I not only used my 18 inch breaker bar but a 2 ft pipe extention to loosen the lug nuts. OMG, I thought they would never break free.
I use PB blaster on all underbody fasteners. Heat works too. I had to use my breaker bar to loosen the caliper bolts on my 944. My impact wrench didn't work. I also use impact sockets. As others have said, Porsche fasteners are better than most.

second for PB blaster.... has helped me on a few cars.
The other PO rant I have is not bothering to put all of the fastners back on. My bat wing was there by 2 screws (that don't look like they know each other) and 3 zip ties. Sheesh. |

Better than PB Blaster???
I have been told by those I trust, and a couple mechanics, that a bit of ATF mixed with Acetone (50/50) will allow you to remove any bolt. Might be worth a try.

I put antiseize not only on the threads for the lugs but on the mating surface of lug nut. Of course I put it on most other fasteners.

I smear some regular old grease on any bolt I put back in. Not a lot, just enough to coat the threads w a film.

I use KROIL on any seized/over tight fastener, then when re-assembling, I will use a new fastener and anti-seize, problem with grease on the calipers, is the heat melts the grease, anti-seize won't melt.

[QUOTE=smokin_944;5441764]I know how you feel... Torque wrenches are seldom used by POs.
I am currently dealing with a moron who used GREEN locktite on the bolts that hold the ref/speed sensor adjuster. FINALLY got the one on the "upside" of the adjuster out, but with the engine still in the car, I can't get the necessary torque nor the required heat to break the "downside" fastener loose. Anyone got any ideas on that (kroil doesn't work on locktite)? lol

I've had my 944 so long now that I'm the PO as far as repairs go. There is a certain satisfaction in going where you've gone before...

Man do I love that cloud of dust when a fastener breaks loose. Both calipers dissasembled well too and brake pads were close to new. Dust seal looks ugly, I haven't popped the piston out yet to look at it. Anyone know if the brake line connection is the same as on all motorcycles and ATV's? I like to use a spare hand brake on my bench to get the piston out.
ideola I learned that from a 40+ yr motorcycle and boat mechanic. It has never failed me on anything. Maybe you will prove me wrong, you do this more than I do. Until the day it fails me I will keep doing it though.

I've tried WD40 and PB Blaster for stuck bolts, but I can't say they've ever really helped. I have not found a substitute for brute force, but it is a bit scary when you are under a low car and the jack stands do anything but stand perfectly still and quiet.

Keep whacking the socket wrench with a regular decent weighted hammer. Back and forth until you get the threads to break free. Then whack to the right
