need opinions

I'm rebuilding a second engine in my spare tI'me for kicks, and going through there are some parts that I'm not sure if i can use, and even tho my gut instinct is to ditch them, i would like to get some more experienced eyes to tell me if these are weird casting marks, or the beginning of cracks

That crank cradle sure is a poor casting. I wouldn't trust it myself, but ditching it means getting another block, too.

u cant buy thos seperatly? if i ditch the block this project is over. i picked up the engine for a charm (250 bucks for the whole long block). 200k miles. if i can replace the cradle alone that would be nice

I think there are more flow marks than cracks in the casting. I'll check a good one I've got in my shop and compare to yours. If you get a different cradle you'll have to have the block/cradle assembly line-bored. If you go with a new short block you won't.

That cradle looks pretty cracked to me. I checked the one from the engine I'm rebuilding.

I noticed you're from canton, I'm from Rocky Hill, maybe I could help you out if you need it. I'm in the middle of my first engine rebuild too so I'm still learning but maybe we could exchange what knowledge we've gained so far.

Crank girdle and block are align-bored as a single piece, so if you purchase another girdle, you will have to find a shop to align-bore the girdle and the block again.

Same basic principle as a rod and the rod cap, they are machined as a unit, that is why there are numbers stamped onto the rod and cap....so you get the same cap back on the same rod.

Hmmm... I noticed defects like that in a few places on my oil pan, mostly along the mold lines, as well as on the block and girdle of a couple motors I had apart during my rebuild. Have it zyglo'd if you really want to know, but that may be just the way they are cast...sloppy. I thought my pan was done for somehow, but upon close inspection and cleaning, it looked like just manufacturing flashings.
