AC Problems
 

Ok, I have an early 85 model. When I got pre-purchase inspection one of the notes was "Heater works, AC does not - no compressor operation, has 134a connection but does not appear to have full conversion".

So I had some guy look at it, and right on the coolant tank it has a blue sticker that says it has been retrofitted with 134a conversion on 6/7/99. (I don't have the car right now so I don't know the exact words on the sticker).

At first he tried to just charge it, it didn't hold, then he saw that there was moisture in the evaporator, he replaced that, still no cold air. So he's going to put a new compressor in.

So my question is, will this work if there are other things that need to be changed if it has not had a full 134a conversion?

well, without knowing what was done in the retrofitting it cant be said what will work. all your lines and connections need to be checked for leaks. and when you go back when he is done installing the new compressor be sure to have the system evacuated for at least 15 mins and the vacuum held at 30"/hg for 30 mins. if it holds then your a re good to charge and test the system. if he is a good technician you will know immediately if there is a problem.

He's a young guy around 22 that does everything out of his own garage. I let give the car a regular tune up and he replaced the evaporator. I don't think he has the tools and equipment necessary to full understand what is and what is not needed to fix the AC.

This is my first 944, so I'm kinda a work in progress learning all dos and do nots. I think letting this mechanic service the AC is a do not.

Front seal on the compressor probably let loose, evaporator was most likely fine.
