Last hurdle crossed!

Anyone:

know how the factory cures the problem of excessive crankcase pressure on the 951? The factory 951 must have another crankcase vent other than the hose from the filler neck or canister.

We were getting pretty bad smoke until we ran a hose from the Dipstick tube to the catch can we built. Now our exhaust smoke is almost non-existant.

wet roads! no traction from first 3 gears as boost comes on. still just running 6psi boost.

No G-tech numbers yet! We are still running way to rich. We have some more tunning to do.

Thumbs up

Don't know how the PCV is done in the 951. Just wanted to congratulations on making the 9451 run so well. Cool concept and I hope that you do well in the Challenge. Watch out for those damn fast clowns though.

excessive crankcase pressure? what i've seen are guys routing the dipstick to either a catch can, or back into the engine just like you are.

you're on the right track, and doing the same thing i've seen in the high-boost 944 turbos.

Thanks Obin:

We are getting some serious blowby. It leads us to believe we have more mileage on the motor than we first thought
(OD 48,000). We ran the dipstick over to the catch can but we are still blowing way to much oil through it. We are going to try the old stainless steal trick in the hose to create a oil filter to catch the oil and hopefully allow it to drain back into the engine after shutdown.

Looking for a low buck vacume pump we can mount on the Alt pulley and pull vacume on the dipstick tube. This will help seat the rings and help cut down on blowby. Fingers crossed.

For all the nay sayers this is normally not needed on engines in good shape.

Lightbulb

wait a minute.... did you guys run some sludge and gunk remover through the engine? try running it through the motor two times in a row. there might be some crap gumming up the motor.

what i've also seen done is this:

plug dipstick line
thread the oil filler cap for a oil tube
attach oil line to tube.
run tube to top of crankcase to recirculate oil.
attach PCV valve somewhere to top of cylinder head (can't remember where, but i think i saw it toward the front of the head)

here's some example pics:

on a 933:

on a 944 turbo:

does that help?

good luck!

Thanks Obin:

Pics gave me a idea on how it would work on the 944. We could take one of the cam tower access plugs out, tap it and use it to vent the upper end with.

We ran 10psi boost on it yesterday for a few runs to see if the smoke got worse or not, and it did not. So that is a good sign.

10psi on 9.5 to 1 compression, the hp has to be way up their.

Our IC is the biggest supprise though. 1.5 psi pressure drop and engine inlet temps 10 degrees above ambient.

We found 90% of our smoke problem!!!!!

Bad turbine seal on our junkyard Garrett T3 .48/.60 turbo.

If you do not live in the extream south, you will not know what I am talking about, but the damn thing looked like a Misquito (Skeeter) sprayer truck during the summer here. People stopped dead in their tracks and pulled off the road to get out of the smoke. It was worse than the Nascar films you see as the guys drive thru the smoke! hehe.

We ordered a rebuild kit from Turbo City. Now that we have a reason to open up the turbo, we will bolt on the T4.60 compressor Wheel, Back plate, and housing, we picked up at a catepilar tractor repair shop for $25. We will lose a little spool time, but the extra flow at the same pressure of the T3, will make killer HP.

I will post some pictures to the Real Racing .com web site of the cross over and down pipes as well as a comparison of the T3 to the T4 wheels, and back plates.

PS. It took 10 min. to pull our turbo. Try that on a 951.
