S to S2 Engine Swap
My apology right up front if this was asked and answered already, but I could not find it via search.
My 87S engine of just about out and I was ready to start a rebuild. But, I found an interesting 89 S2 motor that might fit the bill. My question is would this be how difficult a swap would this be?. I know its a 3 liter vs. the 2.5 and there are changes to the cam timing etc., but what I'm trying to get my arms around is what would I need to plan to change to make this work? Engine harness, DME, other electrical, intake or exhaust fittings? Would the 87S trans and torque tube work will with the S2? Not sure if they are the same I know someone's done this ![]() Thanks. |

I have done the change. It transformed the car, the increased torque sure helps.
If I remember correctly you need to change the DME and make a new connection to the tach. You need to use the S2 air filter setup and position it in front of the radiator, as on the S2. A little body cutting is needed. Position the oil cooler. I used the wiring from the S2, I do not know if they are the same. Trans, tube etc is still from the '87S. The rest is more or less just work. Do it, you will not regret it.

Sigurd,
Thanks for the info. Sounds like the electrical and DME are the real challenges. I'll have to looks to see if the engine electrical harness is included, I know the DME is now. Air filter and oil cooler is as you say, just work. Marc |
