Thump/knock

There was a thread here about thumping from under the car when braking or going over bumps.

I have had that same problem, but until now have not had a chance to lift the car.(94 968 Tip.)

Before, I had the car jacked up on one side just to do a quick check of the exhaust because I was sure that was it. Could not get the same thump by shaking the exh. It was pretty tight.

I was getting worried that it could be bushings or shocks worn out.

Then I noticed my CV joints were making noise, so I had to put 'er in the air.

Got to shaking on the center muffler and noticed it was hitting something. This gave me an excuse to drop from the cat back and do a little repair and housecleaning, as well as making it a bit easier to get to the CV joint.

What I found was the center muffler hitting on the heat shield. I might have been able to just loosen the hanger bolts from there to the tailpipe and drop it a little, giving some extra clearance.

Since I have the cat-back off, I'm going to do some "manipulating" of the heat shield and maybe the center muffler.

I also found the hanger for the cat had slipped out of the rubber mount. I don't think that had a lot to do with the noise.
