944T power steering press line replace
 

I am working on replacing the pressure line from the pump to the rack on an '86 944 turbo. This is the line that runs under the engine. Who has done this, and has a suggestion of how to remove the line on the rack side (driver's side)? I also have the feeling that the key in the banjo bolt has become stripped. Is there a way to get the line removed then? Does the rack have to come out?

If the banjo bolt is stripped, it usually means that the 6 mm allen socket is rounded out.

In order to remove the bolt, I use a Visegrip WR07, and just get enough of the jaw on the head of the bolt to hold it. Then I rap it with a 8 oz hammer and it will come loose.

Yes, the rack has to come out.

Warning: Use only a Visegrip brand tool. The chinese and indian ones are worthless.

Warning: Throw away the old bolt and buy a new one.

Thanks for the reply George. With everything still on the car, how did you get the tools in the area? I have very little room to work. Would the rack have to come out?

Here's what I learned:
drop the sway bar from the A-arms after removing the under side shielding and the front wheels. There is a deflector plate on the driver's side, remove it, and disconnect the steering universal joint from the steering rack. Unbolt the hose from the pump, and then undo the four bolts holding the rack. Everything ought to drop, with some finessing. Then you can access the banjo bolt (or all of them) on the rack. Re-install and refill and bleed the system.
