MPG Gauge

Really random thought -

I have an '87 944 na. My instrument cluster doesn't have an MPG gauge, but I've noticed it on other 944s. From what i recall, I think I've seen it on '86 and older 944s. Do I have that right, or was it an option and I just haven't noticed it on 1987 and up 944s?

my '86 has the MPG gauge.
anything older than '85.5 has a different dash layout & i don't know if they had the MPG gauge or not

All the early cars had it, I believe. My 83 944 does, and all the gauges I've seen pulled off early 944s have it.

It's more of a nuisance than anything else though.

Just as accurate as the tach and more accurate than the speedometer/odometer. I like it, it's old school.

Just got mine working, along with the upshift light. Kinda neet, except the upshift light is telling me I need to be in 3rd instead of second alot.. Maybe those two along with my new vacuum guage will help me with fuel economy... Still got to get ahold of a spedo gear to fix my odometer.

If you ignore the shift light the first time it comes on... It comes on a second time higher up the band... This second coming is where you want to shift to have a fun drive... The first light is the economy spot.... I ignore it at all costs....

Your tach might have been replaced with a later S2 or 968 tach inside the cluster those do not have MPG in them. Where is red-line on your tach? Does your speedo go to 160 or 180mph.

The MPG gauge was on the late style interiors only in '85.5 and '86. '87 on did not have them.
