Tie-rod options

I'm sorting out parts for a total steering overhaul.

Can someone give me a run down on which parts work with what.

I have a 86 944 NA with power steering.

I am going to buy this rack off ebay NEW PORSCHE 944 924 968 POWER STEERING RACK & PINION on eBay.ca (item 290456502904 end time 20-Aug-10 14:09:05 EDT)

It comes with just the tie-rods, but says it fits all models. SO is it just the tie-rod ends that are different for pre 86 and post 86?

I can find whole tie-rods for a 83-86 with power steering on PP. But cannot find just the outer ends for a 86 with power steering.

So I can assume that all cars with manual steering are different then cars with power steering when it comes to tie-rods.

Post 1986 have a different offset so do they use different tie rods and tie-rod ends? or just tie rods?

Want to order this rack soon but if it shows up with tie-rods that wont work Ill be delayed and do not want to re-use my old ones.

Just a little confused, and I haven't even factored in the TURBO part of this.

Any help would be nice,

Thanks.

Go with autozone. they're 190$ with a lifetime warranty.

Autozone might not be a better deal. Out here in California (ironically, really close to the company that the OP referenced on Ebay), the Autozone unit is $200 + $143 core charge and, from the photos, does not include the inner tie rods. At PP those are $160 but include new outer tie rods too. So for a fully functioning steering assembly we are at $370 (don't forget $10 for new boots) going the Autozone route.

With the OPs rebuilder we get a rack for $295 (the price includes a $30 core charge) that includes the inner tie rods. These are, somewhat ironically, available at Autozone for $16/each or $32. So for new everything we end up at $327 and we don't have to do the whole charade on the bench with vice to install the inner tie rods.

Whos to say they would send the correct tie-rods? They say for all models (1978-1994) . Are the tie rods all the same with just different outer tie-rod ends? Im under the impression that there are different tie-rod lengths.

Would the inner tie-rods ends have to be adjusted on the rack? or is all adjustment done at the outer end?

If you read the description, at the bottom it says after closing you need to send them your year so they can send you the right rack. The only difference between early and late power steering is the length of the tie rods. I believe the ends are the same for all years.

Up to '86 are a different length Tierod than the '87 and up. Also different lengths on the non Power steering '83 - 86, different on non power '87 and up. Joint ends are all the same on 924, 924S, 944, 928 and 968.

Autozone was a good deal for me as I drove to the store with my core and walked out with the correct unit, and with new ends $215.00 - still working good after 4 years. (Prices may be a little different since then though).
