Shifter knobs
I have a 968. I would like to update to a boxster combat type shifter knob. Is this possible? What would need to be done? Any suggestions?

Knob Me!
Don't have any sort of answer for you spree, but would like to know what shift knobs you folks have. I am going to be ordering the Harrington shift lever and will be needing a new knob soon. Seems that everything I find is either rice or price. The Momo stuff is fairly nice, but too pricey. About the best one I have found is the B&M 80744 (pic attached) from Summit. It runs $30 and seems reasonible to me.
There are a bunch on ebay by some guy by the seller id: hidxenon on who lists a few black leather shift knobs in this price range. The pictures look decent, but I suspect their quality is much lower than that of a company such as B&M or other. Any thoughts or opinions on the subject? THX, Firestarter |

I do have a ? about the stock shifter knob. The leather is starting to wear out pretty bad on one side of the shifter. I saw here at Pelican that I can either just get the leather sleeve or a whole unit: shifter and sleeve together. Just the sleeve is 1/2 the cost.
Can I just get this sleeve? Will the fit on the top be as good as new? Is it very, very difficult to replace the sleeve? (I've heard it is very difficult to mount) Thanks, -Z.

Most shifter knobs I have seen are round screw on ones. What is the post like coming in to our 944/968's? Seems like its some thin piece of metal not a rod that is the norm.

Spree, you are correct. Our Shift levers are rectangular in cross section. They will not work with aftermarket knobs.
I am replacing my shift lever with one that has a circular cross section. This will require me to change my shift knobs. Z - I am no expert by any means. I too have a rather worn shift boot. In fact, mine is worn through completely (and was when I bought it). I looked into replacing the boot with one from Wheelskins. They sent me the directions on replacing it. It did sound like a PITA. You have to stretch the leather up and around the knob, pry off the shift pattern cap, then tuck it ever so neatly back under the cap to capture it. I could not see any way that I could do this without creasing the leather unless I took many days and a long process of wetting and drying the leather. The net result is that I have since decided to replace the lever since the Porsche unit has its own issues. Hope this helps... Firestarter |

I recently replaced my shifter boot and it wasnt too bad. It was kind of hard to stretch but it took about an hour. I also saw these on ebay I dont know if they will work on our cars but they look cool. The only auction I can find them in has already ended but there was 3 of them so there will probably be more. Well I cant get the pics uploaded but heres the web address.
anyone know why i cant save pics as jpegs or gifs. Only lets me save as art or bmp |
