Headers on Before or After Engine Install?

I removed the headers from my 85.5 prior to dropping the engine - and it was a bit tight to do this.

So....the engine is about ready to go back in, and I'm thinking I should go ahead and install the headers first.

Any opinions about this?

Will it create more trouble getting the motor back in? Did you need to remove them in order to get the engine out? If you can fit it with the headers on, I would put them on first. I've never done it, but I've heard it's a real pain to put them on in general.

I've always installed the cross member and headers before lifting into the car. Did you remove the tranny and pull the torque tube back?

Andrew, I did not pull the TT back....so I'll leave the cross member out so there's room to move the engine forward enough to engage with the TT, after which I'll bolt on the cross member. The radiator is out also (as are wheels, brakes, suspension)...so this leaves extra room in front.

...and do see my PM about your offer to loan me an engine hoist! Thanks again!!

i dunno..i had plenty of room to put the headers back on with engine in place. as long as u don't think u'll run into shock tower clearance....
