How to clean the engine

Now that the head is off the car,...whats the safest way to clean the engine area,...I want to presure clean the engine after I cover up all the pistons,.. is this a good or bad idea. Thanks FM

If the head is off washing it will put water in the Oil passages/pan. I would wait till you put the head back on , spark plug wires in, and all vaccum lines hooked up. Then just cover up the Throttle body with a trash bag and some tape.
You can always use some Carb or brake cleaner if you need to the deck before that...

put head and cam back on and pressure wash , otherwise seal the deck with duct tape or masking tape and use brakeleen and a wire brush, safest and most controlled way, also, tape up any open water, air, and oil ports.

When I did mine, I stuffed rags in each cylinder and then taped the deck of the block completely with aluminum tape. I would not "pressure wash" with high pressure.....apply a good degreaser, let it soak for a while, brush wherever possible, and then rinse at low pressure to keep water from getting into places it shouldn't.
