Need rebuilt rack. Tips on where they will accept a damaged core.

Well, I joined the flock of people getting caught out by a slightly pitted steering shaft when trying to do a DIY reseal.

I need a new rebuilt rack but due to the pitting not all rebuilders will accept my rack for a core. Garo steering parts international e-bay have confirmed they will accept my core. Any thoughts on them, or any other recommendations?

Also, given the cost of shipping the core back over the Atlantic I would appreciate any tips reputable vendors of low priced racks without a core refund.

Thanks

Zims sells rebuilt racks for if i recall, about $275?
not sure about their core condition policy though.

Maybe use:
Euro Car Parts, Cheap Car Parts - Euro Car Parts UK

or convert to manual rack.

eBay Norway or???

Just ideas
John

Thanks John.
I'll look into your link, looks promising. I don't want to go manual, my car is very well preserved and almost completely original.

I'm still curious about Garo steering parts international.

Just some amusing facts.
There is no such thing as eBay Norway, not yet anyway. We are only 4.5 million souls, so I suspect the market is too small for eBay.

The one and only machine shop in my town (second largest) wants $450 to respray the shaft with chrome and machine it, but that's nothing compared to the $3166 a new shaft costs at the local dealer :D

Exactly how is the shaft treated? Is it chromed or is it simply hardened and polished.
The reason I ask is that I'm considering polishing out the pitting and making a new down sized guide ring in delron for the passenger side of the shaft. I'm worried that too hard polishing will remove the surface treatment causing the shaft to rust rapidly.

This is how the shaft looks. Could this be safely rechromed?http://dl.dropbox.com/u/11355367/Shaft.jpg
