924 Carrera GTS Battery wiring question
I was reading the April 2010 Excellence article on the 924 Carrera GTS and observed that the battery was mounted in the spare tire well. Does anyone know the routing path used for the power cable? If anyone has a picture of the battery tray and or spare tire well I would really appreciate seeing it. If anyone has relocated their battery I would also appreciate knowing whether or not they needed to run a ground cable all the way to the front or is it ok to just ground it in the rear.

on most of my 944's but 2 of them the battery is were it is from the factory . the scca ITS car its were the passenger seat was . the 944 v8 (948) its behind the drivers seat were the rear seat was . i had it were the spare tire was but i changed it becouse the best place to put weight is low in the center of the car . also i removed the spare tire wells as the trans can get swaped out much easier becouse i change the transissions depending on what track i'm going to . you can just go to chassis ground as long as its a good clean ground . the motor is grouned to the chassis fire wall in the front . you will need a battery relocation kit . jegs has some at good prices with wire ,box and so on . why do you want or need to relocate your battery ? the stock location is ok not great but ok . putting it in the rear past the axle line is not any better . i moved the one's i have becouse it was in the way for the part of the roll cage that goes to the strut towers . pendulum weight sucks !axle over hang is always something i try to get rid of not add to .

I moved mine to that location, and ran both + and - cables to the starter. They are encased in fire sleeve and attached to the torque tube with stainless steel bands.

962Porsche,
I want to relocate the battery for a few reasons: (1) it can leak acid and destroy the car. I am not happy with mounting an Optima sideways as it looks goofy plus the Optimas can not be serviced. (2) The spare tire and tools weigh almost exactly as much the Optima so I would effectively just be loosing 31 pounds right behind the engine. (3) Relocating the battery to the spare tire well will lower the center of gravity. (4) I want to keep the interior as is and (5) that is where the factory chose to put the the battery on the 924 Carrera GTS and they could have put it anywhere. There must be some logic to their decision, right? Rasta Monsta, I had not considered routing the cables directly to the starter, that sounds like a good way to go because it would save a lot of weight in battery cable. Thank you both for your responses ![]() Lance |

look for pics or wiring diagrams for RoW cars, '86 and up. we got the batteries in the rear left wheel cubby. the cable comes all the way back and the neg is to the car in the cubby. it also has a system for the battery gases. its just a normal DIN55L and it clamps at the bottom just like normal.

as most people know the more weight thats low and center in a car is best . you do not need an optima battery if its located the seats were just a battery box . pendulum weight is a lot worse than the roll rate from the CG . just becouse porsche put it there does not make it the best place .
