Headlamp switch removal
How does one remove the switch from the dashboard? Tried gently levering with 2 screwdrivers the plastic plate in which it sits but it would come out and I was concerned about breaking the plate or damaging the dash cover by using too much leverage .So, what's the trick?

There are two tabs behind the bezel that hold the switch in place. Reach under the dash, no tools necessary and push the tabs towards the center of the switch and it should release the switch towards the back of the dash.

thanks, that worked.
Warning to others-do NOT dismantle switch to check it out or clean it.-you will not get the dozen or so parts back together(ask me how I know)

It is a handfull of contacts and springs, but with a bit of patience you can figure out where everything goes and get it together. I've had to take mine apart twice, to clean burned contacts and then again to reset a contact that had shifted due to overheating. The wiring and electrical in general on these cars is not really sufficient, especially to run full headlight current through that switch. I opted to spend $50 on making a relay wiring harness powered straight from the alternator rather than $80 on a new switch that will eventually fail again. The lights are at least 50% brighter now, too.

Guess you have a lot of very small hands. Well done for achieving it, and bravo for even attempting it a second time!!
9 tiny springs, 3 loose contacts, and a loose ball bearing to stay exactly in place whilst easing the back plate over 4 detents whilst also keeping the rheostat assembly exactly in line with the casing slot.

Yep, at 12:30am after being pulled over on the way back from school because it decided to crap out at the worst possible time...and I had to be able to drive to work in 5 hours. That sucker was a freaking $90 ticket!
