bad noise...

I was sitting in traffic idling for about 25 minutes in the same spot. When the fan kicked in I heard it.(for less than 1 sec.- it was exactly when the fan started) It was loud but not high pitched- seemed like gears grinding but more of a plasticy sound than if you grind the gears shifting- I heard 2-3 more times in the next few days, I'm pretty sure they were all when the fan started but one time it may have been after it had started. It has been 2 weeks since I heard it last and everything seems normal- anyone have a clue? thanks

Could be the alternator belt slipping, the fan draws a large current when it starts. OBS, this is a rather wild guess.

I had a similar problem with my '83...tuned out to be one of the brackets on the fan housing. I let it go for a week or so, but the fan blades broke. I ended up replacing both fans and the housing.

Thanks! Now that I think about it I can picture the fan making the exact noise. I have 2 more days of driving before I'm gone a week then the Haynes Manual will be there in the mail box by the time I get back. How hard is it to replace those 2 things? Also anyone have them?
thanks

Removing the fans and their housing is very easy, I had to remove the air cleaner bracket to get at the drivers side top mounting nut, all the others are easy access across the top and also for the ones at the bottom.
