924 Oil Pan Removal
Is it possible to remove the oil pan on a 924na with the engine still in the car without removing the cross-member?
Lost a rod bearing and want to find which one before I go and completely remove it for rebuild. |

No..........but I will qualify that with I have never heard of any one being able to do it. The pan will just not come out with the rack and cross-member in place. Lindsey Racing makes a three piece cross-member that allows the pan to be removed with the mid section of the cross-member taken out (Rack removal included).

Yes. Drop the crossmember, with steering rack in situ, and let it hang on the tie rods. The 924 motor mounts don't attach to the crossmember, so it's there to support the steering rack, basically. You can gently pry it down if you end up needing more room to get the pan out.

Think about it. It sounds like you have the very common spun #2 bearing. Had it myself. Metle shaving all over the engine internally. You have to pull it. Find a new block! Or you could spend the money and rebuild it. You will need a new crank. The block will have to be stripped of every part. More work than getting a replacement engine or rebuilding a different engine.

Am in the early process of taking the engine out for a complete rebuild over the winter.
Just wanted to pull the pan early so I could know before the removal which bearing was at issue. |
