Intake mod question?
 
I am port matching a spare intake to the head,I'm using some intake gaskets for the jig. I was wondering if I should get the runners honed out also,or if I should just get it cleaned real well through the runners? The only way I know how to get the runners honed a little bigger is send it to a company called extrude hone. Sending it to them would probally set me back a couple of hundred dollars. Well what I'm asking is this,should I pay a couple hundred to get the runners opened up,or is it not worth it on an N/A car? Will it make a difference? After I get the intake on and done I am changing my lifters and possably the cam to a high performance grind,and getting the throttle body bored. I'm not sure about the cam swap yet,I don't know if my check book will allow it. ;) Thanks everyone for your help.

It might be worth it for a couple of hundred, since a new cam & lifters costs 8 or 9 hundred. A thought that I had was to look for one of those old cylinder hones with kind of a flexible shaft & balls of abrasive. It doesn't take much. A 944 head is about 1 3/8 diameter intake port isn't it? Opening up to 1 1/2 gives about 20% increase in area.

Well I thought about the hone w/dingle berry things,but I can't find one small enough. If I did that I would definetly save some cash. I'm not sure if I am going to change the cam to a high performance grind yet. I don't know for sure if putting new lifters on my old camshaft will hurt anything. I have to change the lifters for sure though. Any other feed back????? Keep it comin.

You hear both sides of new lifters & old cam. I've done it back years ago when I worked on cars for a living & somebody would have a ticking hydraulic lifter. Most of the time, no problem. When you're replacing lifters that are galled & pitted, the cam is probably about to go, too. Then you would be faced on replacing the cam sometime in the future, breaking in the new cam on used lifters (bad thing to do), or spending big money for more lifters. If I was going to use new lifters on an old cam, I'd check the rising flanks & nose on the lobes real good.

Honed Intake
 
I had the intake extrude honed and slightly enlarged on my turbo. It made a difference. I also had head work done at the same time.

My guess is that it would help for an NA also. Whenever you do something that lets more air in, the result is more hp if fuel system is up to supplying more fuel. The inside of my intake was very rough. It is smooth now.

Hey Lawrence, thats what I am talking about,however I wonder if I will notice a difference too? You had head work done at the same time. So you don't know how much the difference intake made by it's self? How much did it run you to get the intake done? And where? TIA

i am doing the same to my 924. if you can't hone out the intake runners (which DOES help a bunch) then try to at least smoth out the last portion of the run going to the head. match it as closely as possible to the ports in the head and you will be set!

Justin, I got it from PowerHaus 3 years ago. It was not cheap. I think it cost about 1500 buckaroonies for everything including nuts and washers and gasket. The head included all new valves and was complete. I have their MAF and K27-DR also.

Since both done at same time, I cannot say how much each helped by itself.
