Question NO visible oil pressure

Finished installing a used 87, 2.5L motor (running when removed from wrecked 944) in my sons 87-924S. During pre-start, I attempted to build oil pressure with plugs out & Fuel pump disabled. Nothing reading on the pressure gauge, and the idiot light blinks while cranking.

Tried to prime the oil pump by feeding oil down the center tube of the oil filler. Still no pressure. If the oil by-pass has failed, wouldn't that create excess pressure?

One 944 racer advised starting is the only way to build proper pressure - really?

Help. Insights?

TIA,

From the top.
Make sure the car is level or the oil pickup may be sucking air.
Is the front crank bolt torqued to 150ft lbs?
Are you using an OEM Porsche or Mahle oil filter?
Are you using conventional 20-50 wt oil?
Did you pull the OPRV and check to see if the piston was not stuck?

Don't lose hope.

I got oil pressure after priming the engine thru the oil filter housing 10x after a headgasket replacement. I got frustrated and just like you almost gave up.

Keep priming, it will develop oil pressure.

Here was my ordeal.
Dropping the engine

OK, tried air pressure at dipstick - no difference.
SO I just decided to hook up the rotor and go. Started right up, and oil pressure came up to 1 in a few seconds, then climbed to between 4-5 bars.

Step one done. Engine idled for about a minute or so then quit. Sounds like more work to do.

Thanks,

Yeah, if using heavy oil as mentioned, you should pop up to 8 bar at least till oil warms up.

Yeah, I wish Porsche put 10 bar gages in the 944s, too. We've only got 5.
