Whining noise, I'm worried!

I use my 944 automatic 4 days/week to run about 15+15 miles (home-jobplace-home).
Today was a very bad day, with heavy rain and while driving back home I heard a bad whining sound coming from.. I don't know.

The only thing I'm sure is that removing the foot from the accelarator resulted in a lower noise, while accelerating resulted in a increased noise.
Did it 2 times for about 30 sec each in the first half of my run, then disappeared.

I'm worried, because to me sounded like a clutch noise (I remember my grandapa's car..)...but my car changes smooth and all other values (temperature, oil pressure) are ok. Engine also, altough a small oil leak here and there makes a good sound.

What could it be? A slipping belt ... somewhere??
I don't have the so called splash guard, maybe "something" got water !?!

I will keep you updated (friday).

In the meantime..any advice is welcome..

Check fluid levels for power steering and tranny, and maybe replace the splash sheild.

Power steering and AC pumps are down low where water could easilly splash on the belts without the sheild.

If it quieted back down, keep driving, but with your ears listening carefully.

+1 on checking that the alt & power steering belts are tight.
i had my belts squeal when i would wash my car, until i tightened up the accessory belts

BTW, i didn't know it rained in Italy, why does my 124 spider leak rainwater so bad.

Hi guys,
and thanks so much. From these first answers, the problem can be faced with more "tranquillity", altough I wait another run to say it...
And now that I think well, you're right, the AC/Alternator belt is a bit loose.

About rain, yes I live in north of Italy (Turin, the FIAT city).. rains a lot here and temp goes down pretty cold.
A Fiat 124 spider is nice car, my uncle had one of these...if you look for a very cool and affordable italian "oldtimer", you can't miss the Lancia Beta Montecarlo...
