fuel rail problems
Today I made an honest effort to replace the head gasket on my 84'. I would have liked to have gotten further, but I'm stuck. I took everything off to take the fuel rail off, but the thing just won't come off!!So what I did was take the square caps off the injectors that connect it with the rail, and I twisted it a bit to try to loosen them up. But still, they won't pull out.
So then I decided, well I 'll just take the intake manifold off with the injectors. I took the whole assembly off. But before I tried to hammer it off(with a rubber mallet) I thought I should rather ask you guys if you think I'll break something(like injectors). |

I took my injectors out recently and they were really tight. I thought I was going to break something too. But do you have to take them out? Just take the intake off with them in it!!!
I don't think a hammer is the answer, wiggling and pulling I think works better. After you take the intake off if you really want the injectors out you might spray a little PB blaster in around the seals and then wiggles them out. PB blaster is sorta like WD 40 only better I think. You can get it a most auto parts stores. I wouldn't hammer! |

I go along with T86, if you have the intake off you don't have to pull the injectors to change the head gasket. If they are stuck that bad & you pull them, I'd use new O rings when I put them back.

The reason I didn't want to pull so hard was that I thought I might break the injectors. I know that I would have to get a friend to help me pull these things out (they're reallly in there)but if all I'll break is the o-rings, that's OK. What I wanted to do was to clean them out using the method kevin from pcm injection described.
Also about my intake manifold. I also can't get that thing to budge. Someone might have tried to use super glue instead of gasket sealer on this thing. Because I even sat, and rocked on it and it didn't want to come off. I tried a 2lbs. rubber mallet, and if all else fails I'll just take the manifold/rail with the head, and then hopefully I'll think of something. |

Use the rubber mallet. If you hit it straight the only thing you will damage is the o-rings, and a head gasket change is an ideal time for new seals on the injectors anyway.

Make sure all the brackets are loose. I think there is one to the block, & one to the dipstick.

I got the manifold off the other day with the help of my friend. I originally thought that I left a bolt on, but I check the intake and I didn't. What the problem was that I suspect someone used a super glue or something crazy like that to put it on. Im just happy that nothings broken, and that the thing is off.
BTW:Thanks to all those who tried to help. ![]() |
