Strut re-assembly

There is a popping noise in the front end going over small bumps or when turning the steering wheel. I suspect it is being caused by the strut top as the the spring twists in the seat as the suspension moves up/down or turns.

I think I must have assembled the strut incorrectly when I installed the Koni's causing the upper spring seat not to twist freely with the lower as the strut twists.

This is a late 85 car with the insert style strut. Any suggestions on what to check or what I might have done incorrectly?

Thanks-

There is a spacer that shoud go between the spring hat and the bearing in the upper mount. This was a factory retrofit to compensate for sagging upper strut mounts.

I just did this same thing in Dec, my fronts were shot and making similar noises. I dropped the Koni's in and re-assembled and everything was fine, better than fine actually.

So I am a bit confused as to how this could happen unless you incorrectly put it all back in (as you stated). I put in new bump stops, etc (numbers 4 & 5 in the clarks pic)? I don't think they would affect it, but you never know. I replaced mine, not sure why at this point but I did.

What about the eccentric bolt? maybe something to do with the camber? Just guessing. Or maybe the spring itself is not seated correctly both top and bottom. I had to be extra careful not to mess that part up but I'm a bit of a noob on this stuff and I still managed to not screw up (amazing, really)

Check this out, you may need to break it down and try again

I've just recently printed this out as my new struts are sitting in the garage. I've opted for a interior overhaul first, since the car isn't going anywhere for a while. I'd be curious to see how you make out on this. As my novice-ness would imply, I'm sure I could miss something too on reassembly.

dpoul34,

You have an 87 which has a different set up on the front than an 85. The Koni's for the 85 and older just drop in, but that is not the case on your car. I don't know if you have Koni's or not but I just wanted to warn you of that.

The Koni's are sitting in a box brand new from Ian in the garage. Still on the interior kick at the moment.

Thanks for the advice. Let you guys know how I make out.
