crank bolt not rotating crankshaft.. Please Help!
I replaced the water pump, installed new seals, and put new belts back on, but when I try to rotate the engine the crank bolt just seems to want to tighten, and not rotate the assembly. I took everything back off and you can rotate the crank, and the cam separately. but together it takes waaay to much force to move the crank. sorta like the the big bolt is still tightening instead of moving anything.
I'm thinking thread locker. I need the turbo by wensday. Please Help.

did ya remember to remove the flywheel lock?
try removing the spark plugs & see if it's any easier to rotate

you DO have the flywheel locked to tighten the crank bolt ?? It takes about 155 ft/lbs IIRC.

lol yes! I made sure she was out of gear aswell. I dunno I just put on the timing belt and the crank will move that one... I dunno I'm gonna go fiddle with it some more.

Ok when i tighten the bolt anywhere near 75 lbs torque the whole rotating assembly just freezes like there is too much tension on the crank gears. however at 50lbs everything moves freely like normal. I'm gonna torque it to 50lbs then use some red locite as a temp fix until I know what's going on....

Whoa, whoa...hold on a sec! Double and triple check your timing marks because valves do not work well as crankshaft locks. Figure out what is going on and make sure that crank bolt is tightenned to 158 ft lbs using a flywheel lock (I just do 150 because thats as high as the wrench reads, but as long as you're pretty close). It needs the torque to be able to grip the oil pump drive securely. Take your sparkplugs out just to make sure it's not hydrolocking on something weird. A motor with good compression is quite the workout to crank over with the plugs in place. Check your timing, check the bolt torque, make sure you got everything installed on the crank in the right order, the right direction, and seated around the crank correctly, and make sure there's no stray tools, bolts, etc anywhere they're not supposed to be. It could be possible the oil pump drive gear is not seated into the oil pump correctly if you have removed it. It can be hard to coerce the splines to fit back into place and hard to tell if they have. Check timing! Do not ruin your motor trying to cheap trick fix it.

I have the timing spot on. I'm tired of it, been fiddling with it since 6 today.... I'll take it back down, and redo everything tomorrow.
I would hate to loose oil pressure. that would really make my day... :/ I didn't remove the sleeve just pressed in a new seal between it.

I hate to pose something obvious but possible...
Did you Torque the Crank cradel in the correct sequence and level plus have a healthy amount of cam lube on everthing? Plus main bearings correct size Maybe a compression check with plugs and coil off?? to see if everything is rotating correct? was the crank line bored to the block?

Is this a complete buildup, or just a waterpump and seal job? What was the last working point of reference?
It's probably just something mixed up with the front crank hardware. That's exactly the sort of thing that's really easy to screw up if it's late and you're tired from messing with it all day. Just have a nice critical look at it with fresh eyes tomorrow one step at a time and it should work out. Just be sure to remove any paper towels out of the head before calling it a night. ![]()

Did you remove the crank timing gear? Maybe you put it back on with the flange in the back. Just a guess. But if you did, the flange will push the rear belt cover against the block when you tighten the crank bolt.

Yup - timing belt sprocket on crank got flipped and it's binding on the timing cover.
That's my guess.

Glad you got it figured out, but a word to the wise, follow HondaDustR's advice, and look at it with fresh eyes. Sometimes when we as humans get tired of something we begin to rush the job, then disaster usually follows.
If I encounter something that becomes problematic, I stop, write a note and attach it either to the steering wheel or leave the hood open and put the note on the engine, clean my tools, and come back the next day...fresh eyes and a clear head, plus the note to remind me of the problem. If the job requires draining the oil (even a simple oil change), I always put a piece of tape over the ignition, that way, if something comes up that takes me away before the job is completed, I know not to start the engine before I check the oil.

The trick is to pull out sensibly as 89-944NA describes before you get too wound up and do something stupid. That's usually the hardest part for me. I always want to push through and MAKE IT WORK! (and exactly the way it should, too!). People aren't CNC machines, they're, well...human. It's better to take the bus to work once or twice, or borrow a car than to break something expensive or just forget something important.
Anyway, great job figuring it out. I never can remember exactly how all those stupid sprockets and washers go on up front.

It's most of us diy's forget all the time. Attention to details. Don't rush!
I am getting older and tend to forget the details so I take pictures of every step and when space is available, layout the parts in order they came off.
