Need speedo signal, can I use ABS sensor ?

I converted my 924 turbo to 968 front and rear suspension/ brakes.

Problem I have, that I lost my speedo cable.

So I need a different electric speedo and a signal.

Can the 968 ABS signal be converted to a speedo signal? I know the 964 ans 928 used a box for that (96461822100). But I don't know if the the same number of abs tooth.

For the 968 I can't seem to find a box for it so I assume the signal is converted in the DME.

a GPS would be cheaper

It might be possible to modify the front spindle to work with the speedometer cable. My friend and i put an '86 951 suspension on his early '85. I dont remember the details as it was a few years ago but he brought both spindles to the machine shop and they drilled the holes out. Im not sure if the late offset spindle can be modified the same way but i dont see why not.

If i remember right the 968 uses the ABS module to translate the speedo signal to one the DME can read. Lindsey Racing sells some parts that allow you to get the speedo working when running a 968 trans on a 944 series car. Basically a impulse drive that runs off the CV joint rather than the ABS ring. The problem here is you do not have the ABS module nor the later style speedometer which is not a direct fit for the early style interior. Having done the 968 swap its probably not out of your skill range to retrofit it to work, however at that point i would look into modifying the front spindle.

I don't wont to drill the spindle, it will loose strenght and I use the car often on the track.

I think the best option is to go for a universal VDO speedo. A 964 one with the conveter box is getting to expensive.

Now I need to figure out where to get a speedo pulse from.

My machinist (race fabricator for 30 years) said this was not a problem. . .I drilled a 951 spindle for a speedo cable.

I have seen the 944 type 1 spindels fail on the track twice, so I am not drilling them.

How did they fail, exactly?

What JR said - GPS.

Added bonus - get one with some degree of integrated lap timer/data logger... :D

I looked on ebay, but I can't find a nice GPS unit that is just a speedo, only navagation units.

Does anyone have examples of a nice GPS speedo ?
