Car Speakers
Do all the 944's have 4x6 speakers? I was reading on Clarks-Garage.com and it said that the 944's have 4x6 speakers. Is it just talking about a certain year or all the years? Anyone know what size mine would be? Or I gota snoop around? lol

Front are 4"x6"
Rear can go larger... 4x6 speaker that fits front doors (solved!) - Rennlist Discussion Forums Note: It is the "depth" of the front speakers that is important. I think 1.75 inch deep is max without touching the steel parts inside the door. GL John

There was also a 10 speaker option - In place of the door map pockets there were installed 5" and 3" speakers, including a crossover. The crossover also controlled a Tweeter that was placed on the upper front corner of the door panel. In the rear quarter window panel was another 5" speaker and a 1" tweeter. This panel also had a crossover that controlled the frequencies of those two speakers.

6.5's are really easy to put in the rear of some 87's and all 88 and up cars.
Just remove the block off plate and make a piece to fill the gap.

I put in 4x6 in the doors and then a separate pair of tweeters on the a-pillar. It really sounds a lot better.

Speaking of... anybody got a source for aftermarket 4x6 grills? Got some aftermarket oval 4x6s in the front doors.

I put 6.5 speakers in the doors. Required some cutting and other work but it's very possible.

One speaker that I know for sure fits is a Alpine 426. Its there only 4x6 speaker. It fits perfect. Pick up 4 of those and get a KLA box and 8" JBL sub you will have a very solid stereo.

I just replaced my front door speakers with a pair of Sony Xplod XS-R4644 4" x 6" 4-way speakers and they fit perfectly and sound great.....they are only 1.6" deep, and the 4 mounting holes lined up with the existing pattern. The only problem is that the EOM speaker grills don't fit yet......I might be able to get them to work with some slight modification.

I had a problem with the height of the center cone or tweeter sitting too high to use the OEM grill. It was possible to reduce the height of the cone a good 1/2 inch ans use the OEM grill on some speakers by performing some surgery on the speaker cone. 1) remove or cut away the top trim piece and 2) removing the spacer at the bottom of the cone. There was a screw thru the center of the magnet that held the cone in place that allows removing a spacer. (however I have a different (and maybe cheaper model speaker than above)
