Dyno Results

These are the results of my stock 1984 944 with about 90 000 miles on it. Sorry about the poor quality, it got messed up when i scanned it. I can't find the sheet to scan it again but I am looking.
If you can't make it out it was 131 hp and 131ft/lbs torque at the rear wheels. I made two runs one in third and another in fourth and there was less than one hp difference in the two runs so I am pretty confident in the results. Has anyone else ever had there car on a dyno.

Did you have any kind of mods? That sounds kind of high.

Red face

too high.. are you serious ???

I know that US spec cars are slightly down on power compared to Euro models (Not sure why... govt. regulations? or emissions controls ??) but 131 bhp is seriously low.

As far as I know the early 2.5 had an ouput of 150bhp, the later 2.5 litre (85.5) had 158bhp and the 2.7 litre pushed out around 163bhp......

Not sure what the various US spec outputs for 944's are, but I'd definitely consider a compression test to see if you got any cylinder leakage...

Well, when you consider that the 150 hp is supposed to be at the crank not the wheels, it would be lower at the wheels. I forget how much is lost but I thought it was quite a bit. Anyone know what percent is lost from the crank to the wheels?

I'm no expert...

Those figures sound right , as it is to the wheel output...

Porsche Crest

That's a beautiful dyno sheet on a well running engine, look at the torque plateau... how long and flat it is, and the hp increases steadily all the way up. Those are strong numbers for a 2.5L NA, I hope mine is like that.

It's 143hp for an 84 and that's not at the wheels. Somewhere a website did extensive testing of modifications and the whole time their power at the rear wheels was never over 130. It ranged in the high 120's. So sounds like a nicely running engine... I should dyno mine since I have juast over 100k more that you

Ya I am quite happy with the numbers. I hope to be able to hit 150 -160 hp at the rear wheels with a few simplw mods, like exhaust etc. when I was on the dyno there was a bunch of rice boys around and they were in awe because their soupped up civics were not pulling numbers as good as my porsche. Even after 18 years there is still no substitute.

I don't know what kind of rice boys you have in canada. But here in the US they are able to push more than 130 hp. They can push 200 at the wheels and not even be that serious about there cars. I don't even try compare my car with theres considering it is 18 years old.

Nice numbers! I guess European NAs run a lot stronger.

First time I went to the dyno, a rice boy laid 260 to the wheels and thought he was king. I strapped my clapped out 951 on and put down 285hp and 293tq (w/bad wastegate). He shut up pretty quick.

well Bolkboy7 the rice boys we have here in New Brunswick, Canada are for the most part pretty sad. That is why they were not pulling over 130 at the wheels. There was a twin turbo 300zx there that pulled 350 at the wheels though. But the 4cly na guys for the most part were pretty weak.

COnvevtional wisdom says that the loss in horsepower is 15-20%, so 130 hp is reasonable

To me 15-20% loss in a manual transmission sounds high, I would guess 7-12% based on what I read in magazines. An old automatic transmission can probably have greater losses.

If the crank is putting out 150hp, then 131 would only be 13% loss. Though some people say north american models only had 143 at the crank and if this is true it would then only be a 7% loss.
