need to settle an argument

A buddy of mine says that the turbo 944 rotors and calipers won't bolt up to my 1983 standard 944. I disagree based on my knowledge of corporate economics. It is doubtful they changed the hubs or spindles to accomodate a change in brakes. The rotors are thicker for the turbo, but it would not make sense for the company to change the hub or caliper mountings just to get more sales for a low volumn car. I feel that the front and rear rotors and calipers from a turbo will bolt right up with no problem except possible wheel offset, or possibly brake biasing. If anyone has done this I would appreciate a response. Thanks.

Sorry, they won't bolt right on. The rotors may or may not bolt on, but the calipers are larger and would not fit without changing to Turbo spindles.

ditto - the drivetrains of these cars vary substantially from model to model believe it or not

Do you know what this is? It is my '86 n/a with turbo brake convesion. The front need the turbo hubs and spindles. The rear on the other hand, is complete bolt-on without changing the rear trailing arm. Of course the turbo rotors and calipers is needed. You may need to change the struts to turbo units as well, but I'm not too sure as I upgraded to turbo Koni sports before the brakes.

Thanks fellows
It looks like in the picture that they went to the 911 style of rotor setup. I believe the 911 setup sandwiches the rotor with in the hub while on the early 944 the rotor mounts on to the outside of the hub. It may have been the least expensive route to go to make a new spindle if you had the rotors and calipers already in production. An unexpected twist, but not illogical. This also explains why on Ebay a set of rotors fit so many different models of Porsche. Well I guess I will have to give my buddy a ride. Maybe he will ride in the trunk.
Thanks

83-85 1/2 to convert to turbo............

Rears:

Like mark said rears should be straight bolt on............(can't believe how easy it is to convert the rears)

Fronts:

need from an 86'951-

Aluminum Control Arm: May need this on 83-851/2, my 86 had the aluminum control arms stamped as a 951 part.

Struts (1/4-1/2 inch bolt separation difference with the spindle on 86). For sure you would need this. I can't imagine the 83-851/2 having the right bolt pattern when the 86 definitely does not.

Spindle: they look identical but just a 1/4-1/2 inch difference on bolt pattern. The spindle is maybe about 1/4 inch deeper in size.

Hub: different as well

Caliper: bolts on to turbo spindle, won't work on NA spindle for sure.

Rotor: larger and thicker than NA

Pads: Turbo pads are a notch thicker as well and different size.

Brake lines: On 86na (the same, and should be the same on 83-851/2, from 87 onward (I found out) the brake lines are different! (thanks ribs))

Bolts: the bolts holding the strut and spindles are interchangeable.

Hey mark,

WHat did you paint your dust shield with?

I love the way those brakes look................mine don't quite look that nice....

I will post when I am done.

My friend painted them, I think he used caliper spray paint.
