Side effects of running lean?

What is damaged/ negatively effected when the engine runs too lean. I ask because I saw JGriff's post about "swiss- cheesing" the airbox. http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=58056 I am not sure if this makes it run too lean but if it does I want to know exactly what running lean does. What do you guys think of doing that mod on a 83 n/a w/stock nose panel? Thanks

Pat

i didnt read the swiss cheese post but the air flow is not controled at the airbox running lean will raise engine temps burn sparkplugs and valves

Well what he did was get a hi-flow nose panel and drill a bunch of holes in the front of the airbox. Now the airbox is in direct airstream and the holes are too, He said it increased intake, motor, and exaust sound and reved up a bit quicker. What do you think? Would that make it run lean or would it not make a big enough difference? Thanks

forced air induction the theory is valid but it only works if the car is moving i wouldn't drill holes in my air box though just get some duct hose connect one end to the airbox intake and the other to a scoupe that you could mount under the bumper it should not harm the engine since the extra air is only forced in when the car is at speed and the fuel system should richen the mixture
