The "sweet smell" is coolant.
Check for leaks with a rented/deposit coolant pressure tester from your FLAPS (friendly local auto parts store) like AutoZone or ??? Put in 10-12 pounds of pressure and watch for drips. IF--IF---IF you do not find drips, get a leak down pressure tester and check> Compression-leakdown test I replaced my fan relay switch on the radiator and it cured the "sweet smell" and yes, I agree with JRboulder----need AOS seals GL John
