Even more Turbo S / S2 questions
 

Here we go again:D

I will make this short and sweet,
be aware that I am getting this information off the Pelican parts website (thank you Pelican!) however no one is perfect so I am double checking these specifications.

I see that...
1988 944 Turbo S = 250 HP 2758 LBS.
1989 944 Turbo = 247 HP 2758 LBS.
Same car???

Also...
1989 944S2 = 2637LBS
1990/1991 944S2 = 2857LBS
Did the S2 gain 220LBS after 1989 and if so is that due to more luxury items or performance mods?

My owners manuals put all those cars much closer to 3000lbs.
Don't fool yourself, 944s have never been light cars :(

Your S2 info is especially wrong, as the '89 and '91 cars are the same.

BTW: With a cage, I hope to get my turbo down near the 2700# mark.

Those numbers are almost all wrong. 88 Turbo S and 89 Turbo cars put out the *same* 247 horse at the flywheel. The S2 put out 208 horse at the flywheel, and NEITHER weighed under 2900 lbs. Model years with each of these cars mean nothing, there were no changes and especially no power gains/losses. Those vehicle weights, aside from being inaccurate, may have been taken from a dry car or a test car, the options on these cars were minimal and didn't affect weight very much. -Trevor

Yeah, the weights are way off, however, I think the S2 only came to the USA in cabriolet form in 1991 and mayby 1990. That would probably explain the weight discrepancy between the 1989 and the 1991. The 1989 weight is probably for a coupe, while the 1991 is most likely for a cabrio. Both weights should be at least a couple hundred pounds more than what is listed though.

So if I if I understand correctly... and this is important because these are all cars I am considering.

Other than options that may have been installed on the individual cars making them slightly different...

Would it be fair to say...

The 1988 Turbo S and the 1989 Turbo are practically the same car.
The 1989, 1990, 1991, S2 coupe are practically the same car.

I am looking at all these cars at about the $10K price give or take thousand so are there any MAJOR differences?

BTW I don't mean differences between the turbo and S2 we have already discussed that and for my personal use my first choice is a S2 however if an exceptional price/condition turbo S becomes available I may be tempted to go for that.

Yes, same engine. 1989 models had more creature comforts than the 88 turbo S, I believe.

Yes. Probably some miniscule trim/equipment differences between those years, but nothing significant. Only cabriolets were imported to the USA for the 1991 model year.

The biggest cosmetic difference between the S2 series is that the 1991 models got a different rear spoiler, similar to the forthcoming 968...

There were S2 coupes in '91. A unique feature being the spoiler Zoltan spoke of

from memory, i seem to remember . .
~ 600 S2 coupes for '89 to US
~ 400 for '90
~ 500 for '91

Were double or triple as many cabrios in '90 and '91

The 944 Turbo S and the 89 turbo. Well I believe the 88 turbo S could only be had with the tartan interior with manual seats. The 89 turbos.. most of them had the power seats so a bit more weight. Also the weights range greatly depending on what was ordered on the car. Seats, (sport or power) stereo.. could have as many as 10 speakers... or stock of 4 on 944S2.

The only major change that I know of on the S2 is the oil pan or gas tank. Can't remember at the moment which.. but one of these was changed from steel to plastic. So there is a difference in weight.

I have driven both cars. 89 944S2 with M030 suspension and 86 turbo, plus 88 Turbo S. The S2 definately has the low end grunt, but the Turbo (admit the 86 was modified) and turbo S just stomp the S2 at anything past about 50 mph.

Either way you go get the newest on you can. You can't loose no matter what you get.... just know the turbos are much easier to get more power out of.
