battery dead - fan switch?

is it possible that my fan ran all night and killed my battery?
if so, what caused this, a fan switch or something? where is it and how do i know if its bad? thanks!

The fan Thermally activated switch is screwed into the drivers side of the radiator. Unplug it. Take a resistance reading across the switch. If the engine is cold and the switch is OK, it will read open (infinite resistance). If it is bad, it will read closed. If bad, the cooling fan can run on low speed until the battery is fully drained. Try it.

When checking the switch, you have to first remove the wires on it. They plug in. Then it does not matter about the battery because the switch is isolated from the rest of the system.

you dont have to remove the switch to test it i wouldn't assume that its the thremo switch though usually the go bad in the open position and the fans wont run at all if you try to jump the car and the fan comes on then its the fan otherwise i would look at the battery have you checked the water level how old is it run the car to charge the battery shut off the ignition and check from the positive battery terminal and a ground on the engine is there voltage then its a power drain

My '86 951 has no alarm system. With the clock and aftermarket radio, it would draw about 20 millamps with ignition off. The clock is about 8 milliamps.

Reason why I measured was because my battery would run down in a week if car was not used. Replaced battery. No more trouble.

Also the old battery was overcharging and puking acid. I had to fiberglass the area under it because holes appeared. Next time I won't wait so long.
