Sunroof Wind Noise
I've got a 1984 944na. When I get going over 45 MPH I start hearing wind noise from my sunroof. Get to 100 MPH and its really loud! Thinking about replacing the sunroof seal.
The thing is... if I depress the sunroof button to close the sunroof (even though the roof is already fully closed), the wind noise almost completely goes away. Once I let go of the switch, the noise returns immediately. Since the sunroof seals aren't that cheap, I don't want to replace it unless it would most likely solve this problem. Could it be something else? Haven't really looked at it too closely yet, but was hoping someone else has experienced this before and figured out an easy (and free) solution! By the way, it doesn't leak water through the sunroof. |

It sounds like the seal to me. When you push the button down again even after the sunroof is down, the sunroof motor is pushing down really hard on the seal there-fore elimating the noise. I would look for and imperfections in the seal before just straight up replacing it.

hey,
my rear hatch makes noise because the seal and tightening the hatch reduces the noise. From that and from what you say I would guess that your problem is the seal. The key is I'm guessing. To find out if it was the seal on the hatch someone told me a few things to do(someone from this board) I'm sure someone out their had this same problem that you do and could help. If not go with the seal replacement. good luck Pat

cheap solution
WalMart sells a weather stripping rubber tape that can be used on windows and doors (not a porsche part, otherwise go Pelican!). There are various sizes at my store. If you were careful, you could lay it in the four sides - without blocking the drains - and increase the tightness. The nice thing about this solution (which has worked great for me for ~6 months so far) is that it's cheap and not permenant. If you need to tear it out, you just pull it right off. If it worked, great $4.00 solution. If it didn't, great $4.00 idea!
Either way it's a test to see if you just need more tension between the roof and ridge.

Wow, that could also be a great addition to tightening the rear hatch pegs a bit to get rid of the sqeaking that most of us have. Heh, when I was tightening the hatch pegs on my 944 a few months ago, I had one seize and snap off, so I drove over to Partsheaven to buy another one...now it's a bit too tight and hard to turn the key, so I've gotta mess with it more. Maybe I'll loosen it a touch and try some of this tape around the hatch seal. Thanks!

Thanks for the suggestions. Especially like the Wal-Mart $4 option vs. about $100 for both of the Porsche sunroof seals. Will give a try tomorrow if I can find the weatherstripping and report back.
