charging problem

On startup my 86 turbo will show about 13.5 volts on the gauge, confirmed with a DVM at the battery terminals. After everything gets good and warm it's only showing just a hair over 12 volts. I'm guessing dirty grounds or the voltage regulator is worn out - anyone have any other ideas?

Yes. Remove the regulator/brush pack and clean the slip rings with a spray contact cleaner. Also remove the battery terminals and clean thoroughly.

mxfrank +1.

If you replace the VR, you should "dress" the brass slip ring in the alternator with some fine emery papar or you will "eat" the carbon feet of the new VR.

You could take the car to a local FLAPS and have them check with their guage while the car is running. (Instead of taking the alternator out and have it bench tested).
The battery should also be checked if the cleaning of the posts and grounds does not help.

My guess is that after all the work you do to find the problem, you will buy a Bosch Remanufactured $$$ alternator and the problem will be solved.

When it is putting out 12V when warm, you may damage the car electronics. High amps---low volts.

Battery is new with very clean posts. How bad is getting to the VR on a turbo?

Im a fan of replacing the voltage reg. and it's acutally pretty cheap.the voltage reg is the same for all the alternators i belive and you can get a nice Adjustable one to help things run better and brighten things up.

I'll try and find the post or the part# of it as i still have a new spare for
"just in case"

Maybe it was the placebo affect but the car ran smoother and the lights were brigter once i took up the voltage to 14.1 volts i belive it was
