any tips for safely removing the DME?
 

i'm getting my 944 DME upgraded. other than disconnecting the battery (of course), are there any tips on how to get the DME out safely? i've never completely removed one of these things before... only dealt with them totally in, or totally out of the car.

I think you have to ground yourself to the box. I did it when I changed the chips in mine. I have seen computer techs do it when they replace components on my computer here in the office. They wear a little bracelet that is grounded to the computer chasis by a wire. I think you have to worry about static electricity.

And make sure you don't reverse the chips. They can be plugged into the wrong sockets. I hear they're toast if you do this. They have ID numbers.

Obin --I'm assuming you meant getting it out of the car. Here's what I encountered on my '87 n/a. Folded back the carpet and wooden pad. There were 3 screws that had to be removed which hold the DME case to the body structure. When loose, there was enough slack in the umbilical cord to get everything out where I could see it. There is a big long female connector which locks on to the DME box. On one end there is a tab that goes into a metal piece on the DME. The opposite end has (and here my memory is faulty) a piece like on a computer connector that you squeeze and get out of the way. Then you can pull the connector off the DME. Pretty easy really but as Lawrence cautions---just be careful about static electricity at this stage too.

Battery needs to be disconnected before you even attempt to take the DME out. If you don't, you risk frying the thing. Other than that they are pretty straight forward on removal and upgrading.
