helpfull hints for 944 newbie
 

Hello,

I recently acquired a 84 944. I know it needs a new clutch, paint, interior, tires, rotors, pads, calibers..... so far. We will know more after firing, or attempting to other issues with the engine. We have a clutch. Once we install that we will go forward from there. Are there any helpful hints that you would like to share with me and some of the vices and ticks that seem to be a normal issue with this car. :confused:
Also, if you have something to offer that you may think we need.... go right ahead. I believe we are in for quite a project!
I would like to inquire about opinions on some of the best part manufacturers aside from porsche.

I know this web site has tons of after market Porsche parts but it's very pricey LINDSEY RACING - Your Porsche Performance Parts Center and yeah it does sound like you have a large project tashas, also be sure the oil cooler is in good condition, to tell if its bad you'll have a brown "milkshake" in your coolant (i know from experience), which is very common on the 944 to go bad.

Clark's Garage Shop Manual can be very useful in repairing your car.

Welcome tashas, there also also 944online.com for new and used 944 parts. How long has it been since the car ran? If quite awhile take the time and pull timing belt covers to check belts and rollers before starting. If belts and w/p have not been changed , do it (at least the belts) as a broken belt will result in bent valves. Clean all grounds. Pull each fuse and clean ends as well as holders for them. Pull relays and re-seat for good connections.

It does sound like quite a project. As I have heard before a cheap porsche is usually a very expensive porsche, or you are only $8,000 from a $5,000 car. (these apply to me also, but I really like the cars)

Use the Elring RMS (rear main seal).

Okay..... thanks so much for the replies. I am a newbie with the Porsch and with wrenching. Well I can do some small matenience. :-) this car is my first hands on project so naturally I am trying to educate myself as much as I can about this model and what others think are the best products and so forth. I have a great support team to back me up, thank god, or this car would never make it. My boyfriend is an amazing mechanic and his best friend wrenches for Porsche in Pasadena. So thank goodness I don't have to pay for labor..... the parts are more than expensive enough! :eek::rolleyes: I don't want to race it, though I am not a complete purist either...... like all of you, I just want to end up with one bad ass car! And can actually say I was the main reason it got that way!:D

I would say Timing and balance shaft belts and the other components that are in there like belt rollers, water pump and seals should be checked over like others have mentioned. Because if those fail you will have to do a lot more work.

Timing belts ear easy to do even yourself but the right tools make it easier, heck there are even videos on youtube about it.


Buy you're parts from pelican as you need them. Prices are great, navigation to the parts is great, and since you're in socal and Pelican has a warehouse there it shouldent take more then 2days to get to you. And they process you're order very quickly and not a few days later like some places on the net.

If i place an order from 8-11am it gets processed and shipped in about an hour FAST!

Get the car sorted and running good first before you start with the lindsey goodies.....

+1 agree 100% with you Sidney,maintenance with the proper OME parts (if possible) is a must to get your car well sorte out .:D

Plus modding a car to full on bat schit insane gets pricey... I'd wager to guess I dropped more on my suspension last year than the OP paid for their car....

Buy OEM or OEM quality parts from a reputable supplier like Pelican. They always take care of me when I need something. Then once you have the car running good look at places like Paragon and Lindsey.
