Makis,

You should have the skills to do the job.

Prepare by getting an engine support for the top of the engine. You can "get by" with a DIY support made out of 4x4" timbers if necessary.

Read many DIYs and prepare.
New rod nuts are requied.
Check the oil pickup tube--excellent pics above.
Read about the tricks to hold up the oil pan gasket with dental floss.
Have the correct sealants on hand
Work slow.

TexasBlake has a good write up. He has a lot of good info on his web pages. Read a few procedures, Clarks +++

I think I can just attempt to do it myself the bearings but not sure I am able to remove the engine if things are worse. What would you suggest. My oil pressure is good so I don't think the bearing starved of oil but is most likely the high mileage that is done it.

Get a mechanic's stethoscope and probe the valve cover bolts, exhaust flanges and intake flanges for lifter tick. If the noise is not there, probe the oil pan and lower crank case for rod bearing knock.

I tried to get a stethoscope today but could not get one at my local shop. So decided to to remove the Pan to have a look. Quite hard work I must say. I am not sure if I should be happy with what I saw. The rod bearings look just fine new really after 178K. No vertical play, but there is some lateral play (direction of the crankshaft) and all exhibit the same play. So I would say this looks normal. At least I now the noise I am hearing may not be terminal. Time to get that stethoscope from ebay as I saw there quite few. I can wait as It will take a bit of time to get the engine back together.
