I had a similar problem... unfortunately it was two small cracks at the top of the gas tank. They were tiny at first, even then, the tank could hold no pressure. Luckily, my tank was repairable. Now everything is normal, it feels like a nice tight gas cap seal... but, it always was.

Well I got a $7 cap from Pep Boys (I'm not a purist when it comes to gas caps). I passed, actually they just looked at my Pep Boys receipt and checked to see if gas cap looked new. No actual retest.

Josh, I drove cross country in '98, I remember Western states, maybe midwest with 89 octane Premium, or even only 87 available, and 8000 foot altitudes too. Man my POS Camry was dying on those mountains.

in upstate NY this is the way things work:

1) you roll in with a Porsche and they say "4 wheels, Porsche, windshield, turn signals, no flat tires..

PASS!

2) if they don't pass you, then you drive down the street to the guy that WILL pass you.

there are some really scary cars on the road around here. mean borderline scary. i've seen all sorts of crap that makes you think "how the heck does that pass inspection?" but it amazingly has a fresh sticker on it. you can get past 99% of stuff that would fail you in any other place by saying "ok, i'll go to NAPA right after this and fix it."
