Wink '77 924 w/ 4 spd tranny....swap w/ ????

Hello folks, I resolve the a/c issue. There's an after market under the dash unit complete for $750.00 and I'm going with that as a weekend project.
But my new question after reading similiar post about swapping out the 4spd to five spd?

So basically, is there an easy solution to convert the 4spd to a 5spd other than selling the car and buying a 5spd

Hi Bob,

I'm not that familiar with the way the 924 is put together, so I can't help you concerning the fit.

The one thing I will caution you to think about is this: the 944/924S gearbox is designed to be used with the 2.5L drivetrain, so using it on the 2.0L might give higher gear ratios than you would want.

It would be like using a 951 gearbox on your 944

Yes, it's swappable. Mainly you'd need the trans and the shift rod (it's a different length).

That of course is if you were to find an Audi-based 924 5-speed, from a 2.0L car, not the 2.5L 924S or 944. So it's the preferred solution, least amount of work. You'd be able to swap the trans from behind, and when you get the trans out it'd be easy to swap the shift rod.

BTW, the shift rod from a 924S or 944 would work too, same part.

But the trans from the 2.5L cars would, in addition to having some longer gears (some work out the same - taller R+P, but shorter in-between gears), require more work of parts.

The gearing might be OK for street driving, and lower revs on the highway; for racing it was a bit of a dog.

The 2.5L trans has a larger shaft diameter than the 924, so it won't bolt directly up.

You have two options.

If you get a 944/924S trans WITH torque tube (make sure the latter's in good shape!), you can swap in the torque tube as well. Then you'll need a Ford Bronco clutch disc (might as well put in a new clutch release bearing too, while you're in there, and release bearing guide tube). The Bronco clutch disc (get from NAPA etc) has the correct OD to match the 924 flywheel, and the correct larger spline to match the 944 torque tube shaft!

More swapping of parts, but it all bolts together.

The other option is to take the torque tube coupler from the 924 and the 944, cut and weld 'em together. Then they can be used at the trans to join the 944 trans to the back of the 924 torque tube. This has been done too, successfully, as long as you've got a good welder on staff. More fabrication, but a lot less hardware to swap.

'77 924 w/4 spd tranny.. swap w/????

Thank you all for your answers and my next question on this topic is... Can't I find a 5 spd tranny from 924 from the years 1980-1982? Would that a simple swap?

Yes, that'd be the first choice. Note that the trans from the '79 NA or '80 Turbo are not desireable, not remotely a simple swap - just don't go there.

But 80-82 924 NA is ideal. '81-82 Turbo would be the same as early 944.
