storing valve lifters
hi - about 4 months ago we bought an 85 944 - turned out to have a blown engine - we replaced the engine and saved what we could from the ruined one - we were pretty disgusted at the time so we pretty much just stashed the parts away - i now read that i should have placed the valve lifters in oil or they will ...what? - are these lifters now ruined? - or can i put them in oil now and compress them so they will refill and they would be ok? - right now they're in their original positions in the camshaft tower - also since the i don't know how long the engine sat they could have gone without oil much longer - i wanted to keep these in case i ever needed them - anybody know if they could be used again - thanks

I accidently mixed my spare lifters up. If you ever need one, you're going to mix and match anyways, unless you use the spare cam tower with the lifters in the correct spots. I store mine in a jar of oil. I imagine they'll be ready whenever I need them.

I think that's just so the guts don't rust. They should be ok. Most of the time they stay full anyway. Years no. Id say months are ok. I also have a full extra set properly stored of you don't want to use them. I say run them. They are easy to get to and the gasket is cheap.

The lifters should be stored in the order of removal (if possible).
Porsche prefers they go back in the same bore (if cam housing is reused--so do not drop them on the ground when you lift off the cam housing.) The lifters are stored laying down with the pin hole up ^. The mixture is conventional oil and 10 percent SeaFoam (preferred). Lifters completely covered. It is suggested (by me) to get a hypodermic needle and fill each lifter ( by the pinhole) with the mixture until the oil comes out of the pin hole If you have done none of the above, do it now! Check the lifters for "softness" by pressing in the center piston. Semihard and very hard is good. If you can do it without force, the inner piston may not pump/fill up and function correctly. Use only INA OEM lifters ---good used are OK. New INA lifters have been known to fail. GL John

If the original cam is good mark the lifters as to which bore they were in and they can be re-used easily with the cam. Match used lifters with used cam lobes is the order of the day - as sometimes if not matched can cause premature cam wear/failure - rare but possible. Plus all of the above about storing in oil - check them out - if tight can be reused.
