Spongy cornering
I noticed that when putting my 951 into a hard, long corner the car is spongy. At least for a 944. 944's are well known for their corner-killing capacity. I tested my shocks, where absolutly fine, not leaking and not bouncy at all (i notice this as well when driving on bad roads, the car is as hard as rock). The springs are fine as well. And in straight line the car is just hugging the ground, never bouncy. So what am i looking for here. It seems to occur only in hard corners, so something is not 100% when putting the car into a corner.
Any ideas? Thanks! |

Spongy as in lots of roll or spongy as in pushing, like it doesn't want to turn. If it's lots of roll, 951's do have quite a bit of roll from the factory. But, you just had work completed, right? Did your guy remember to bolt up the front sway bad when he finished? If it's the other, check tire pressures and alignment.

Thanks for thinking with me here! But the car is still at the mech, it will be ready this weekend or somewhere next week (driveshaft had to come from Germany). I already noticed this before bringing the car to the garage. It has always bothered me a bit. The car is just doing great at slow speeds and fast turns, but when putting her into a very long corner at about 65-70mph the car seems to bank left and right too much, it seems as it can't really settle or bite itself into a long corner.

You might want bigger sway bars or stiffer springs/torsion bars. They have affect on body lean in cornering.

How many miles on the car?
Does the nose dive in braking? That would indicate weak springs.

what type of tires to have on it. A good set a tires vs. a bad set can make all the difference in the world in handling. Just a thought anyways.

Thanks for the feedback:
The tires are pretty new, front 205/40 17" and 255/40 17" rear. Tires are not the problem, no wear, on the right pressure (if there is a something as the RIGHT pressure). The nose isn't diving when braking not even when putting it to the limit. I had to stop from 80mph into 0 pretty fast a couple of weeks ago and didn't notice a thing (besides scraping my face of the windshield). I have everything stock, no altered sway bars and nothing like other fancy bars. Maybe i'll have to try to do the exact same corner type but then with right turns (maybe something has worn out on one side only). Any other ideas are always welcome!! |
