Just thought I'd toss this stupid question out there before I spend money on any new parts!
Turn signals stopped blinking yesterday on my 1987 944. I'm guessing that all I need is a new relay, but I was wondering if the problem could possibly be in the turn signal combo switch on my steering column. (I will probably end up replacing the combo switch anyway because ever since I've owned the car, the turn signal has failed to cancel its self after a left turn... but it is 160+ dollars I don't need to be spending right now if I can avoid it!) Anyway, any help or info is greatly appreciated. Thanks! |

It sounds like you have 2 problems there, and from what I understand neither of which stem from a faulty signal switch. When you say the the blinkers are not blinking, do you mean they don't work at all or that they light up and don't blink? or do they not even light up? As for the blinkers not turning off after you've completed you turn (straightening your steering wheel) the blinkers fail to stop is most likely due to a broken pin in your steering column. I have never dealt with this but read about it while trying to fix another blinker problem on my 944. Don't buy a new switch just yet but search this forum for blinker problems and one of the threads outlines what is required to find those canceling pins so that you can replace you left canceling pin.

I'm pretty sure that if you have a disconnected turn signal or a blown bulb the display will not flash on your instrument panel. check that first.

Thanks for the responses! Yeah its strange, at times the blinkers will work perfectly, then other times I will throw the switch and the blinkers will just remain lit without blinking. My gut is telling me "Its the relay". The bulbs should be ok as they are fairly new. Think I might as well just order the relay since its not expensive at all. It would just suck to be wrong and then have to wait for some other part to ship here to Jersey. My 944 is my daily driver! :-) Luckily, until I get these turn signals worked out I do have a plan B (my Kawasaki Ninja), which truth be told, during summertime is more of my plan A anyway :-)

It would suck to be wrong, but it shouldn't decommission your DD. One of my biggest pet peeves on the road is people not using their signals, but lets face it, they aren't essential to your commute, you probably won't get pulled over for not using it, and, if you really need it, you can just flick the stalk back and forth to actuate the "blinking" manually

That is a huge 'pet peeve' for me too! And I actually have been flicking the stalk up and down before turning or changing lanes. I really can't be driving my car without turn signals. I can't stand people who don't use them! (Besides, I don't really need to be giving the fuzz a reason to pull me over since... I don't always drive TOTALLY sober. (Shut up haters, over the legal limit does NOT equal "impaired".)) Anyways, I just ordered the flasher relay. Should be here in a few days. Let's hope this does the trick! :-)
