electrical help rear hatch?

Hi. Trunk light doesn't light. Bulb is new (tried 2). There is power to the hot lead, the 2 grounding wires aren't completing the circuit. I suspect when the switch is in one position, the light is 'always on', in the other, 'on when hatch is open', middle = off. The light does not work in any of the 3 positions. Is there a relay somehwere that could be at fault? Where would I find it? Also, where is the switch that tells this light the hatch is open?
cna someo explai how is system suppost to work and where gorund are?

the light does not come on when the hatch is open, it comes on when the doors are opened along with the dome light.

IDO.. I am unsure that your S2 is set up like my '83 N\A BUT When my doors are closed, I can open my back hatch and the inside dome light will come on as well as the trunk light. So with that in mind check to see if the electrical connection to your back window pneumatic shocks are good as they will either corrode or come loose.

The wire that attaches to the strut is the power to your rear defroster.

The little black wire at the body end of the passenger side hatch strut is the ground for the light for when the hatch is open. It should connect to a flat metal clip that contacts the bare chrome strut rod. That clip is the switch. There's a rubber sleeve on the other end of the strut rod (first 1" or so out of the cylinder) that breaks the contact between the clip and rod when the hatch is closed. This breaks the ground circuit for the light and turns it off.
