Rebuild early control arms
I'm looking to rebuild my early steel control arms, I got the ball joints down pretty good, but how do you R&R the other two seals?

Couple of suggestions. . .have the arms debushed by a machinist (the fronts aren't that bad, but the rears are awful to remove). Then have the arms stitch-welded along the seams, and powdercoated. Finally, grab some ProThane poly bushings for Rabbit/Golf Mark I (about $25 for both sides).

I'm actually wanting to know how to remove the rear bushing. I've heard of some people setting them on fire, but that is not what i want to do.

Fire won't help you get the metal sleeve off. It is pressed on (as stated twice already). Easiest path is with the help of a machinist.

forget the machinest it will vary or they will charge you by the hour. More importantly is what bushings did you get exactly. only other bushing i have seen like that were from another site and they cost an arm and a leg.

stitch weld
A good welder will "stitch" up the places that the factory skipped to save costs. Using a pattern that will minimize distortion and result in a stronger than original arm.

The front end parts are cheap, buy new. C arms, ball joints and bushings are mebbe $150 for the early cars. Stitch welding and powdercoating $100. Done. The only thing I would do different is get performance bushings, ($257) but that is me...

Your Prothane part number is 22-201. Bought mine at my local air-cooled speed shop, Halsey Imports in Portland.
