85/1 944 idle problem

i just changed my timing belt, and a bunch of gaskets(cam tower gasket, intake gaskets, injector seal kit, etc) and i had a "chugging" issue before and was thinking maybe the auxilary air valve so i cleaned that out with some brake cleaner. now i got it running again and its idling like crap, even dies after you start it if you dont give it some gas. it seems to run and drive just fine, and when it gets to operating temp it actually idles better. not 100% tho.
i was thinking maybe i ****ed up the auxilary air valve or something. i have a spare one, just dont really want to take the entire intake off again before getting some advice.
any suggestions?

I feel your pain.............
You could be telling my story!
I'm gonna suck it up and replace mine with new...........

And WYAIT timing and balance belts........maybe WP???
@#%$^&*^%$*#$@?{|}@#$
Good thing I like my car.
Best of luck with yours!!

OH and double check your balance shaft belt alignment- mine were off when I did my belts and it idled like BUTT HOLE--they can be a pain to get lined up.

ERAU944 06-24-2011 11:01 AM

just how does a BUTT HOLE idle?

apparently not well, lol

i'm interested to see if your idle valve is the culprit... i suspect i may have issues with mine when cold.

well...... I have no balance shaft belt because there is something in there that whines terriblyyyy. so I just took it off until I can save up some money to replace whatever is whining.
Anyway, before I changed the timing belt, the car did idle fine without the balance shaft belt because it had snapped and was sitting in the bottom of the timing belt cover for who knows how long. and the only thing I really messed with was that stupid aux air valve.
so when i change it, I will let you guys know if it fixes it.

the balance belt is supposed to whine. you will learn to love it. the balance belt should be set to a tension where you can grab the long span of the belt between thumb and forefinger and just barely twist it 180 degrees over. it may seem looser than a normal belt but that's how it goes.

check your throttle position sensor or your airflow meter. the TPS has two positions - idle and wide-open. if its not clicking idle position, the computer is trying to run the car like its under part throttle but there's not enough air/fuel for that.

or the AFM is stuck in the wrong position...

MDH - cam tower gasket, timing belt and balance belts, and waterpump can be done in half a day, if you are careful and patient. it's not hard at all to do. again, be patient with it and it will go easier than expected. and not all that expensive either (for the benefit you get)

its really suppose to whine? i drove it to see if i was just being over dramatic about it, and it sounded sooo freakin loud, like something was wrong LOUD?

mikepellegrini 06-26-2011 05:25 AM

It's s'posed to whine, although if you tension the belt the wrong way (counter-clockwise) it howls like a banshee.

From Clark's:
Install the balance belt as follows:
Route the balance belt from the upper balance sprocket around the crankshaft gear. Ensure there is no slack in the belt from the upper sprocket to the crankshaft gear.
Continue routing the belt around the lower balance sprocket again ensuring there is no slack from the crankshaft sprocket to the lower balance sprocket.
Route the belt around the tensioning roller and back to the upper balance sprocket.
Pre-tension the balance shaft belt enough to remove any slackness in the belt and tighten the tensioning roller locknut.

NOTE
Turn the tensioning roller clockwise to tighten, counter-clockwise to loosen.

Install the balance shaft sprocket covers and retaining bolts. Tighten the retaining bolts to 45 Nm (33 ft-lbs) while holding the sprocket with Special Tool 9200.
Rotate crankshaft two complete turns and set at TDC for number 1 cylinder.
Verify that the camshaft, balance shaft, and flywheel marks are aligned for TDC.
Timing Belt and Balance Shaft Belt Installation

My guess is you tensioned it turning the roller counter-clockwise.

i cant remember which way i was tensioning it, but i thats it! i am gonna put the beezy back on and tension it the right way. haha thanks man

The balance belt is not supposed to whine.
If it does, it is because it is adjusted too tight no matter which way you turn the roller.

then either your belt is too loose, or we have different definitions of whining :p
