Power Steering Bracket replacement
 
Hey, new 944 owner. My 87' 944' that I just bought has a bent power steering pump bracket. The previous owner bent it loading onto a trailer. The pulley is just a bit tilted outwards. Has anyone ever changed out one of these brackets? If so, is it a hard job? Thanks!

The power steering pump attaches to a cast aluminum piece that also serves as the lower balance shaft cover. Replacement is not terribly complicated. If the car is not needed as a daily driver, you might just cut off the p/s bracket portion of the cover and swap it with someone who runs a manual rack on a '84+ car.might be able to get your replacement bracket for free. Mine broke a few weeks ago. I will be replacing it in two weekends when I have help. It is next to the water pump, which means the timing belt, balance belt, pulleys, and timing belt rear cover have to come off to get to it. At that point a new water pump seems logical.

Nope. No need to pull the belt. I have a spare if either of you want one. 20$+ shipping sound reasonable? One of you I saw is in denver. If you swing by the house ill show you a disassembled block and show you how it comes off.

Anyone ever end up doing this? Im about to replace a motor and need to take the good one off the motor coming out and put it on the motor going in. Having a tough time finding information on this one. vdubr928, I would love to avoid disturbing anything I don't need to. What is your take?

The bracket is a aluminum cast piece as mentioned before and bolts onto the face of the motor, and also acts as the lower balance shaft sealing face. You would have to pull the balance belt and lower balance shaft pulley and the rest is bolt-on- it doesn't have a gasket or anything like that other than the balance shaft seal itself (you don't need loctite 574 or anything like that). Very simple.

Yeah, it will free turn, it will actually wobble a bit without the seal because it's only supported by a single bearing 8-10 inches back or so and the front seal.

As far as marking the shaft, the balance shaft pulleys have two slots for a woodruff key because the upper and lower are the same pulley but the shafts are designed to be 180deg out from each other. There is a notch on the pulley and a notch on the rear timing cover to line up. Read Clarke's on how to do the balance belt and you'll know it all!
