Sticky Side to Side Shifting

Hello all,

I have been working on replacing various parts on my 944 and one of my problems is a sticking shifter when moving right to left. I have read that it is a rusty linkage, but are people talking about the linkage in the shifter, or on the trans? Thanks! Any additional advice is always helpful.

Side to side motion is usually internal to the transmission if it's sticking. How is your shifter, is it sloppy? 100% of the 944's out there (whos owners havent replaced the shifter) have badly worn pins.

Shifter doesnt seem sloppy, just need two hands to get from 1-2 to 3-4. Going down is still pretty easy. I did replace the fluid with Swepco 201 a couple of years ago but there seems to be some seepage around the plug. Perhaps I didnt torque the plugs down enough and the fluid has gone low.

I'd almost say pull the linkage off the tranny and verify that the motion is fluid. It will be highly sprung but it should push in faily smoothly. If that is ok, the tranny internals are ok and the linkage on top of the tranny is binding.

Ok thanks for the help, I will use the information to help guide me after I am done with a clutch slave replacement :)

I'd had my parts car sitting for a long time before I took its LSD 951 tranny out and put it in my '85. The shift linkage was extra hard to move side to side just like you described. A good spray of WD40, and a few weeks of use, and it felt great.
