944 Porsche sought in fatal Cobb hit-and-run

Off topic for technical..just a FYI for my fellow Georgia Porsche owners..and fellow motorcyclist.

Cobb County police said Tuesday they have narrowed their search for the vehicle involved in a fatal hit-and-run motorcycle crash over the weekend.

Police are looking for a gray or silver 1986 to 1991 model year Porsche 944.

Investigators were able to zero in on the make of the car from evidence recovered at the accident scene and the assistance of the manufacturer. The search also continues for the driver of the Porsche.

Police say Emanuel R. Mitchell of Norcross, a 31-year-old riding a black 1990 Kawasaki Vulcan motorcycle, died after being struck around 8:30 p.m. Saturday by two vehicles on I-75 in the southbound lanes near Windy Hill Road.

Mitchell died at the scene, police spokesman Dana Pierce said.

Sonni Smith, 23, of Atlanta, told police her Mazda 3 struck Mitchell after the driver of a silver Porsche driver made initial contact with his motorcycle. Smith, who will not be charged, said the Porsche driver fled.

Police previously said they were looking for a Porsche coupe with tinted windows and moderate damage to the left front of the car. Anyone who has information about the accident is asked to call the Cobb County police, 770-499-3987.

2 arrested in fatal Cobb hit-and-run

By Joel Provano

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
12:49 p.m. Wednesday, August 31, 2011

Cobb County police have arrested two people in a fatal hit-and-run motorcycle wreck Aug. 20.

Brandon Michael Weston, 32, of Smyrna and Pamela Kay Rice, 41, of Marietta were booked into the Cobb County jail Tuesday on charges of 2nd degree vehicular homicide; hit and run; tampering with evidence; and several other charges, Cobb police spokesman Dana Pierce said Wednesday. Weston was also charged with several traffic-related offenses. Both are being held without bond, Pierce said.

According to an arrest warrant obtained by Channel 2 Action News, Weston owned a 1987 silver Porsche 944 but did not have it registered and had no insurance.

The warrant also says that after the fatal hit and run, he and Rice conspired to have the car taken to a repair shop in Alabaster, Ala., where the damage was repaired. The car was also painted black, and the shop's paperwork was doctored to say the work was done before the hit and run, the warrant stated.

Police say Emanuel R. Mitchell, a 31-year-old Norcross resident who was riding a black 1990 Kawasaki Vulcan motorcycle, died after being struck by two vehicles on I-75 in the southbound lanes near Windy Hill Road.

Mitchell died at the scene.

Sonni Smith, 23, of Atlanta, told police her Mazda 3 struck Mitchell after the driver of a silver Porsche made initial contact with his motorcycle. Smith, who will not be charged, said the Porsche driver fled.

Police had been looking for the Porsche for 10 days.

Pierce said the break in the case occurred when someone became suspicious after seeing the damaged Porsche at the body shop in Alabama.

That person "began to research the Internet," Pierce said. "After locating several news stories through media outlets in the Atlanta area, the individual contacted the Alabaster Police Department. Detectives there ... notified investigators from the Cobb County Police Department’s S.T.E.P. Unit and within a few hours, parts that were recovered from the original interstate crime scene were matched to the damaged Porsche at the body shop," he said.

What they did was just awful. Great to hear they are behind bars.

(From a logic point of view) So wait...These two people commit a felony with a car that there is no record of them owning yet they decide to keep it? Why not just wipe it down really well and drop it off in da hood with the doors unlocked? It would be gone by morning and it would be disposed of or if they do pick up the thug he would have had a great motive to flee the scene (you know...he stole it).

There's a reason I waited until after they got arrested to post that.

Any body who would be stupid enough to leave the scene of a bad accident like that would be stupid enough to drive the car down main street - What about a criminal IQ of around 70

So I am guessing it was a Turbo or S2? that would be the only thing narrowed down by 86-91

Also it was a ****ty thing to do.

I mentioned the S2 because it shares the same body lines with a turbo and the first post said it was narrowed down to 86-91 . But after reading the last article I would say it is a turbo.

Kudos to the guy that turned them in. I hope he still has a job. I wonder if the guy or the shop doctored the paperwork?

The thing had to be stolen. 944 people are too good for that kind of behavior!

I think the News reported that the guy owned the Porsche - without current insurance and registration, but it was owned by him. The way it was traced back to the fellow was through VIN Registration...The people at the body shop that was out of the state called the police and the car was then traced back to the jerk owner.

Even if it is stolen it will probably be up for impound auction...

My problem there is the thought that some Ass killed a fellow human with the car, even though it is probably an 87 Turbo.
