can u leakdown test while engine cold?
 
does engine have to be warm to get "results" from leakdown test?

right now my cam tower is still off after replacing headgasket.

#2 and #3 get <5% leak
#1 and #4 get 20%leak. leak exhibits itself thru oil filler and oil passage on head.


is it the rings?

The results will vary from cold to hot, but a cold test is still valid. Presumably, as things warm up, it might seal better.

If you have a 20% loss in two cylinders, yeah, rings might very well be the culprit. Other possibilities include gouges or other problems in the cylinder walls.

If you didn't notice anything weird when you had the head off, then maybe you can rule out problems with the cylinder walls.

Was it burning oil or having other related problems? Did it blow the seals in the AOS?

If it's running good and not burning any oil, I'd be tempted to deal with it later rather than sooner.

before the headgasket blew at the track 2 weekends ago, it was running just fine. did not abnormally burn oil (1/2qt to 1qt per track weekend)

after emergency headgasket replacement at track (with a visually good used one from one of the spec racers), i drove home on it. it was continuous blowby. burned ~2qt in 150 miles. fumes coming out the oil filler while engine running.

there were some light scratches on #2 and #3...did not observe significant ones on #1 and #4 where the leaks are. the headgasket blew at #3.

Did you ever put a new head gasket on? There are oil pasagez in the head. You could simply have a bad seal on those two.

yea brand new headgasket is on.

i poured like a 1/2cup of motor oil into #1 and #4. leakdown went down to as little as 7% and slowly climbed back up to 20%. so it's gotta be rings/cylinder walls right?

is it still "ok" or is it completely shot that it needs new rings and rebore?
