I think i'm in deep s***
finally got my '91 s2 on the road, ran good for a couple weeks, then yesterday i took a run to the store and when i got back to the car it wouldn't start, tried all the usual suspects, ahter getting towed home, but when i got to removing the dist cap,i found that the dist rotor was not turning! Timing belt right? but when i removed the belt cover to check, the belt looked fine, relatively new, and it still had good tension. so i turned the crank shaft with a socket wrench on the front bolt head. the balance belt moved but the timing belt did not!
could the timing belt gear have sheared off the crank shaft??? or is it just that the belt is jammed up and feels tight still? Also, what is the possibility that there is no valve damage? thanks

sounds like the timing belt lost a few teeth on the crank pulley....stop turning it......
unfortunately there is a good chance there was contact but have seen "good luck" before if it happened right when you were starting it and the engine not under load....... you need to investigate further.......but from what you've posted so far doesn't sound good.....sorry you may want to pull the cams first so all the valves stay closed to get it back in time......it'll lessen the risk if the timings that far off..... you will need to get a new belt on there first and get everything back in time......pull the spark plugs so it'll turn easily, if there is ANY resistance do not turn it further, turn it over by hand, if there's no interference then do a compression test.......

Will do.I think you're right from everything i've ever heard. It was on start up, I'm just wondering what would make the teeth sheer off. I'm hoping i didn't lose the overhead cam chain, but i guess i'll see when i take off the valve cover.

Sounds like the chain pads to me. They will cause the cams to bind. Hope not though.

You called it dawgz! just took the valve cover off, pad is destroyed, chain is mangled,i guess the timing belt teeth were sheared off. it looks like the valves on cylinder 3 on the lower cam are fully open! Not good. All for a freakin nylon pad!

yea that would be the cause, cams locked up from the chain, braking the belt......i would pull the cams out and do a leak down test......this will let you know how bad it is.....if the numbers come back good you may be able to fix without pulling the head.....
cross your fingers.....
